Lori’s Hands is continuing to adapt services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with recommendations from the CDC and state and local officials. We’d be happy to speak with you in more detail about our current parameters and services offered.

Enrollment & Eligibility

To be eligible to volunteer with Lori’s Hands, a student needs to be:

  • Enrolled full or part time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an institution of higher education
  • Willing to make a weekly commitment of 1.5 – 2 hours to visit and/or call a Lori’s Hands client throughout the course of a full semester
  • Willing to engage Lori’s Hands clients in meaningful discussions and to provide friendly companionship
  • Willing to undergo a criminal background check
  • Reliable
  • Interested in learning more about the lived experience of managing a chronic condition

Next Steps

We’re glad you’re interested in volunteering with Lori’s Hands! The enrollment process is completed asynchronously and includes several trainings designed to help orient you to working with individuals with chronic illness and our service structure. Once you fill out the form above, here’s what you can expect will happen next.

Complete the registration forms and trainings

Once we review your information from the interest form above, we’ll send you an email that will provide you with the volunteer registration forms and trainings. The enrollment process can be completed asynchronously, but we recommend that you complete it all in one sitting. You can expect the enrollment and training to take about 1 hour.

Meet with a Lori’s Hands representative and get your Lori’s Hands t-shirt

After you’ve completed all of the necessary enrollment forms, we’ll schedule a time to meet with you to review the parameters of volunteering with Lori’s Hands and to give you our classic dark green t-shirt. We ask you to wear your Lori’s Hands t-shirt to every LH visit and service activity.

Receive your assignment and begin visiting!

Now that you’re cleared to begin volunteering, we will assign you to a client as well as a student partner. You’ll be responsible for calling your client to introduce yourself and to schedule your first visit.

Weekly visits

Continue visiting your Lori’s Hands client on a weekly basis for the duration of the semester. Visits should last about 1 - 1.5 hours. On your visits, you can expect to help with daily household tasks like grocery shopping, light cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, gardening, and providing companionship.

End of the semester

When the semester ends, let us know if you are interested in continuing to call or visit your client during the break or the following semester. While we’d love to have you continue volunteering after the close of the semester, you are not required to do so.

FAQ

What types of care will I be asked to provide a Lori’s Hands client?
Students are only permitted to assist with Instrumental Activities of Daily Living such as light housekeeping, grocery shopping, and gardening. As a volunteer, you are not permitted to assist with personal or medical care like bathing, dressing, administering medications, or serving as a safety sitter.

Do I need to have a car to volunteer?
You do not! We have lots of opportunities for you to get involved, whether or not you have a vehicle. During the enrollment process, we’ll ask you if you have a car so that we can connect you with the most appropriate service activities.
